CASS Metrics and Impact Framework Efforts Discussed in ADAC Webinar
The July webinar for the Accelerated Data Analytics and Computing Institute (ADAC) Portability, Sustainability, and Integration (PSI) Working Group featured a presentation by Gregory R. Watson on “Using Metrics to Improve the Sustainability of Scientific Software”, Co-authored Greg leads the CASS Metrics WG as well as CASS member CORSA. Co-author David E. Bernholdt leads the CASS Impact Framework WG.
Abstract: The Consortium for the Advancement of Scientific Software (CASS) was established by the Department of Energy to facilitate the stewardship and advancement of the current and future ecosystem of scientific computing software in support of competitiveness and innovation through the advancement of science. CASS maintains a software portfolio that focuses on freely available libraries and tools that enable leading-edge computational science and engineering research on high-performance parallel computers. CASS is developing a framework to provide a uniform, but flexible approach to gathering information to help the CASS member organizations understand the status and progress made by supported software projects with respect to the quality and sustainability of the software, and the impact those and other improvements have had on the usage of the software and on its ability to support scientific discovery. This framework will utilize metrics that provide information relating to these aspects of the software, and will leverage research-backed analysis tools to help collect and interpret these metrics for the long-term benefit of their software development efforts. In this presentation, we will describe the framework being developed, how it will help projects understand important factors regarding the health of their software, the metrics that are available assess project and software vitality, and techniques for collecting and analyzing these metrics.
